The MIXED function of GPS utilizes both C/A (Coarse/Acquisition) codes and Y code signals, but it is important to note that the use of Y code signals is contingent upon the availability of security keys. The C/A codes are the standard GPS signals that are available for civilian use, while Y codes provide a more secure and encrypted form of GPS signal for authorized users, such as military personnel.

The MIXED function is designed to enhance the reliability and security of navigation by allowing devices to switch between the standard C/A codes and the more secure Y codes as necessary. This ensures that users can benefit from the improved accuracy and protection against interference associated with Y code signals while still being able to access the standard signals when needed.

This knowledge is crucial for professionals in avionics and navigation systems, as it highlights the importance of security and flexibility in positioning systems. Recognizing the implications of using both signal types helps in understanding GPS system design, security protocols, and operational capabilities in various applications.
